Flash Vocal — Addition is on Google Play, after iPhone and iPad. A sum appears, the child says the answer out loud, the app listens and validates. No keyboard, no buttons: the child answers, and the next card appears.
Why out loud
"7 + 5". A child who has to type the answer has all the time in the world: they can start from 7 and count on their fingers, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. They get there, but they have memorised nothing. It is the right answer, reached by the wrong route.
Out loud and at a steady pace, that detour no longer works. The child says "twelve" because they know it, or they hesitate and it can be heard. That is the step Flash Vocal — Addition works on: from "I can work out 7 + 5" to "I know that 7 + 5 makes 12". The app only validates an answer that is genuinely spoken.
It also measures the time of each answer. A table still recited slowly shows in the statistics, even when every answer is correct.
The path
- All ten tables, from +1 to +10, each split in two halves so the child is never overloaded, then its review.
- Cumulative reviews from the +3 table onwards, going back over everything learned so far.
- One-minute sessions, and one, two or three stars depending on the number of correct sums. A few minutes a day are enough: short, frequent repetition is what builds the reflex.
38 steps in all, for ages 6 to 8, and for remediation at any age.
On Android as everywhere else
It is the same app as on iPhone and iPad: same path, same statistics, same result screen. Speech recognition runs entirely on the phone or tablet: no speech is transmitted, no recording is kept, and there are no ads and no account to create. It speaks the device's language, among sixteen.
Tables +1, +2, +3 and the first half of +4 are free, with no time limit and no cap on sessions, for one profile. The Family (3 profiles) or Education (30 profiles) subscription opens the rest; it can be cancelled at any time from Google Play.
