Flash Vocal — Roman Numerals

Read them, write them

MCMXLV is not deciphered: it is read.

A Roman numeral appears, the child says its value. Then the number appears, and they write it in Roman numerals. On-device speech recognition, 100% offline.

The app that turns decoding Roman numerals into reading, and writing them into a reflex.

Why out loud?

A Roman numeral is not read in one go: it is taken apart. Faced with XLIV, a child who writes the answer has time to count. Out loud and in rhythm, that time disappears: either the form is recognised, or the hesitation is heard. That is what Flash Vocal measures, and no multiple-choice quiz can check it.

Teachers

up to 30 pupils followed separately

How does it work?

  1. 1

    Read out loud

MCMXLV appears, the child says “one thousand nine hundred forty-five”. On a large number, the app listens to the whole utterance: a hesitation in the middle is not a mistake.

  2. 2

    Write by choosing

The number appears and four spellings are offered, hiding the classic mistakes — IIII, VI for IV, XXXX for XL. Choosing makes you recognise the form.

  3. 3

    Write on the Roman keypad

Seven keys, I V X L C D M, and nothing else: the form is no longer recognised, it is produced. That gesture is what anchors the rule.

  4. 4

    The path unfolds

Twenty-seven steps from I to MMMCMXCIX: every range read, written, then both mixed, with three reviews from the start. One to three stars on pace — 8, 14 then 20 correct answers per minute.
