Flash Vocal — Subtraction is available on iPhone and iPad

A subtraction appears, the child says the answer out loud, the app listens and validates, with no connection needed. Flash Vocal — Subtraction is on the App Store.

Flash Vocal — Subtraction is on the App Store. It joins Flash Vocal — Addition, with the same idea: getting children to say their tables out loud, until the answer comes without counting again.

What the child does

A card appears: "9 − 4 = ?". The child says "five". The app listens, validates, and the next card appears. No keyboard, no buttons during the session.

Faced with a subtraction, the temptation is to count again: backwards, on the fingers, one by one. A child who taps an answer has time to do it. A child who answers out loud, at a steady pace, no longer does: they know, or the hesitation can be heard. The app only validates an answer that is genuinely spoken, and it measures the time of each answer.

A session lasts one minute. At the end, the child earns one, two or three stars depending on the number of correct subtractions. A few minutes a day are enough.

A path of 38 steps

  • All ten tables, from −1 to −10, each split in two halves (results from 0 to 5, then from 6 to 10).
  • Never a negative result: every subtraction from 1 − 1 to 20 − 10, with a result between 0 and 10.
  • A review for each table, then cumulative reviews that mix everything learned so far: −1 to −3, −1 to −4… up to −1 to −10.

The tables come in the same order as in Flash Vocal — Addition: a child who knows "4 + 5" finds "9 − 5" as the same table, read backwards. At the first session, a short demo ("5 − 2 = ?") shows how to answer.

What you follow

  • The result screen: how the session went, a pace indicator (animals, bikes or racing cars, the child's choice) and how the child felt about it.
  • Statistics, table by table and session by session, with the reaction time and the pronunciation time of every answer.
  • An optional daily reminder, which only fires on days without a session.

Who it is for

  • Age 6: the first tables, taking away 1, 2 or 3 without counting again.
  • Ages 7 to 8: every table up to −10, including crossing the ten.
  • Remediation: filling a missing reflex, whatever the age.
  • Teachers: up to 30 pupils tracked separately, with the Education subscription.

No connection, no account

Speech recognition runs entirely on the device. No speech is ever transmitted, no recording is kept. No ads, no account, no tracking.

The app speaks the device's language, among sixteen: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Turkish, Catalan, Ukrainian, Russian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Chinese. If the voice for your language is not already in the app, it downloads once; after that, everything works offline.

Free to start

Tables −1, −2, −3 and the first half of −4 are available without a subscription, with no time limit and no cap on sessions, for one profile. The Family (3 profiles) or Education (30 profiles) subscription opens the whole path; it runs for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or 1 year and can be cancelled at any time.
